Federal Reserve Lowers Interest Rates for Second Time This Calendar Year Amid Financial Instability
The US central bank lowered interest rates on midweek, representing the second reduction in the current year amid economic turbulence stemming from the government closure and trade duties.
Move Arrives at Extraordinary Moment for Federal Reserve
The decision to cut the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a range of 3.75% to 4% comes at an extraordinary juncture for the Fed. The institution has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs despite persistent inflation.
Central Bank Announcement Notes Labor Market Shifts
In a statement, the Fed stated that the jobless rate had gone up but remains low. “Job gains have slowed,” the release notes. “Price increases has moved up and stays somewhat elevated.”
Federal Closure Complicates Central Bank’s Task
The continuing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in American history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Collection of key financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the shutdown.
Data Gap Affects Policy Decisions
The Federal Reserve typically analyzes BLS data to determine employment trends, such as the count of new jobs added to the economy and the present jobless percentage. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, before the closure, and gave a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the employment scene in the previous month.
The figure of jobs added to the economy in August was lower by more than 100,000 since the spring, and unemployment rose to 4.3% – the highest since three years ago.
Alternative Reports Show Continued Decline
Though the bureau was set to release September’s employment data in early October, it suspended its release once the closure started. Private payroll firm ADP indicated recently that the business segment eliminated 32,000 positions in last month, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.
“Supply as well as demand for labor has fallen quite sharply,” Fed chair the Fed chairman said earlier this month, which he had previously said comes from trade and immigration measures.
Inflation Report Shows Moderate Increase
Though BLS’s employment data has been suspended, the bureau still issued its price statistics for last month that showed that prices are rising, although slowly. Costs rose three percent over the last year, the highest since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
