The Iconic Puzzle Game Couldn't Win at The Game Awards — A New Category Could Fix That

Each time a significant awards ceremony nears, one notices a clamor for the addition of new categories to acknowledge overlooked contributions and satisfy the spirits of fans who have specialized interests.

A fellow writer previously argued supporting a scary games classification. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance if I try to elbow in front because like all single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request remains most pressing above others. This is the request: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Classifying creative works defies precise measurement; it’s very subjective, and inevitably start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why movie academies avoid this approach. Yet it remains a necessary evil for the industry of video games, that demonstrate such variety they barely qualify as a single art form.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of interactive entertainment excellence to be recognized, while allowing diverse titles to receive proper recognition, specific award classifications remain vital.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Leading game ceremonies offer these award types recognizing Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these award types effectively encompass a lot of ground, making space possible for numerous titles.

Different situation exists for puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Consider three of this year’s best games, showing diverse approaches: the architectural riddles of one title, intense tile-matching of another game, engaging interpersonal challenges in another game. Which classification works among existing types? Simply put, no category fits.

The Representation Problem

Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games published annually lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive independent game categories.

  • A renowned logic title received no recognition completely that year
  • Another imaginative release was excluded during that ceremony
  • Popular arranging title was overlooked in 2021
  • Just some brain-teasers barely qualified for independent or mobile categories

Significance of Puzzle Games

Commonly they're compact experiences, yet the craft in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Famous handheld logic titles rank among most engaged experiences worldwide and have been for many years.

The iconic tile-matching title competes with well-known building titles for the title of highest-selling title ever; it also contends as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, and engaging across multiple categories.

The Solution and Justification

Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. It would be easy to populate a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent many worthy titles.

Restating the point, these include experiences that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators are working at the demanding boundary interactive creation, creating some of the purest expressions of the video game form. Comparable to film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. Let’s not keep them waiting generations.
