Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge System in 2025.
Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay systems.
Video review technology will be launched at Wimbledon this year.
Competitors will gain the ability to challenge specific calls made by the official, mirroring the system currently in place at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.
The new system will be accessible on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.
This step follows just a year after the AELTC rolled out electronic line calling, which terminated the longstanding role of line officials.
What Can Be Reviewed?
Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the official to review other situations, such as:
- Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
- If a ball touched an rival's racket or person on the way past.
- Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a point.
Importantly, there is no cap on the amount of reviews a competitor can ask for.
Practical Application
A recent incident occurred in Indian Wells recently, where a top player used the review system against his opponent.
Draper admitted it was a difficult call for the umpire, but thought his rival had "played the rules quite well."
The umpire watched a video and determined the player was responsible for interference, awarding the point to Medvedev.
Broader Adoption
Video reviews aren't new for Grand Slams. It has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.
Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have the system in place at all of its tournaments.
Other Changes
A further innovation at Wimbledon this year involves the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.
This solves instances where fans have sometimes been uncertain whether a shot was out or in.
In other news, with precisely a century of days to go until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have also revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
